The "3EP" Jean Monnet Module aims at educating students and the public about the policy making process in the European Union, focusing on the evolution of policies in the field of energy and the environment. The Module has been created at the Cyprus University of Technology, a newly established public University with mainly technological orientation, and is primarily addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate Environmental Science and Technology students. It intends to familiarize students with the main institutions of the European Union and how decisions are made through the interaction of these bodies, educate them about the historical and political background of European integration in the environmental field, and prepare them to utilize this knowledge in their subsequent professional involvement in the environmental sector in any EU country.
For this purpose, the curriculum of three courses taught at this Department is substantially enriched with topics about the history of European integration, EU institutions and EU energy/environmental policy. Specialized teaching material has been developed, also as e-courses, which will also be distributed to environmental science/engineering students and faculty members of the two other public Universities of Cyprus.
A number of additional related activities are taking place throughout the duration of the project, some of them targeting high school students and teachers and some directed towards the general public. These events include a roundtable discussion on transportation and European climate policy, public lectures on EU water policy and governance, and workshops on the economic effects of EU climate and water legislation.
